Turn Off Your Television

Oklahoma TornadoThis week has brought more heartache and devastation to our country, but in true American fashion the outpouring of compassion and support hasn’t waned.

Facebook is full of touching videos, pleas for donations, and resources for help.

But what I continue to see is parents posting about their children’s reactions to the news coverage. The questions. The heart break on their young faces because most are just too young and incapable of understanding the kind of tragedy Oklahoma is enduring.

We saw the same thing happen when Sandy Hook took place. Parents trying to explain horror to their children. And while these are two different ball games totally, the solution is the same.

Parents… Turn off the television.

Turn off the news coverage and walk away. Take the time to catch up on the coverage and the community outreach when your little ones are in bed or simply occupied with something else.

These are images they don’t need to be exposed to.

I wish I could swoop into Oklahoma and cover the eyes of every little child I see on the news. My heart breaks that these young souls had to experience this kind of devastation. My heart breaks for every single person directly impacted by these horrible tornadoes.

You don’t need to shield them forever. But the images we are seeing right now aren’t what we should be exposing our children to. So turn the television off.

If you are looking to help those impacted Molly from The Digital Mom Blog wrote an awesome post called 5 Ways You Can Help Tornado Victims in Oklahoma. There is a great list of donation resources including the American Red Cross.

Be sure to support safe and reputable charities.
